The purpose of this gallery is to offer further sources of information and inspiration for the topic of Rebirth.
These are also the sources we used ourselves when creating the Rebirth Kitchen, Bathroom and Playroom.
There are also some reflections offered by the creators and a space for you to share your own thoughts on the topic, the specific sources or the Rebirth rooms you have just been in.
Rebirth as a Stack of Coins
The Buddhist concept of rebirth is often described in ‘the metaphor ... of an acorn. An acorn becomes an oak tree. When the oak tree is here, the acorn is not, and no part of the acorn can be found in the oak tree. One simply has succeeded the other, just as one moment and one life succeeds the previous moment or life’ (Fischer). So, rather than the view of a ‘red thread’ in which an unchanging essence such as soul or spirit travels from one moment/life to the next, Buddhist philosophy argues that each moment is simply a cause for the next. This is likened to a stack of coins, in which each coin forms the basis for the following one. Inherent to this idea is constant change; there is no moment in our lives which is the same as the previous. A moment passes, and gives rise to a next one. In a sense, we and everything around us are reborn in each and every moment. As a buddhist meditation teacher put it: ‘rebirth takes place every moment, every instant. Every instant is death; every instant is birth. It’s a changing process: there’s nothing you can grasp onto; everything is changing. But there is some continuity, of course—the change is the continuity’ (Trungpa). It is said that this view, though at first daunting, carries in it great hope. For, if something lasted forever, there would be no possibility for things to evolve, new things to be created. So from this perspective, rebirth and change lie at the heart of creativity. Without rebirth, creativity and creation would not be possible. In fact, nothing would.
